New England | Day One

When I was growing up my family went on a lot of road trips. By the time I graduated high school I had been to soooo many states, but somehow we had never managed to get up to New England. So when I found some cheap flights to Boston a few months ago, I booked it right away! We were able to leave Finley behind with my parents and it was really nice to have a little break from reality! We totally felt like newlyweds again.

We arrived in Boston on Saturday night and drove over to our Airbnb in Lexington. Zach got sick of me saying "IT'S SOOOO PRETTY" really quick, but I couldn't help it! The leaves were just beginning to change in Massachusetts and the little Cape Cod style homes were so freaking adorable. I loved it. Our Airbnb ended up being one of those cute houses and we really liked it there.

Our host was a sweet single lady who was a retired high school French teacher. We had fun getting to know her and she even made us homemade blueberry pancakes for breakfast. I told Zach it felt like staying at my Grandma's house. You really can't beat that!

In the morning we woke up early and started the two and a half hour drive up to Sharon, Vermont to see the Joseph Smith Birthplace site. Since it was early Sunday morning, the visitor center wasn't open, but we actually liked it because we had the whole place to ourselves. They had MoTab playing over speakers and it was just really peaceful there with the pretty leaves and the mountains in the distance.

Next we headed to New Hampshire to drive through the White Mountain National Forest. This place was gorgeous and had the best foliage by far on our trip. Zach got a little sick of the winding roads after a while, but I still think it was totally worth it. We definitely don't get that kind of nature here in Texas.

We exited the national forest on the eastern side and crossed the border into Maine that afternoon. We ended up in downtown Portland and it was such a cute city. I loved all the brick and the cobblestone and the water was so pretty. There were lots of great places to eat and shop and we couldn't help stopping and getting some potato donuts from The Holy Donut.

Around sunset we drove down to Cape Elizabeth to see the famous Portland Head Light and then had dinner at The Lobster Shack at Two Lights. Super good lobster rolls and right on the water! I had hoped to eat outside, but it was SO cold! We let ourselves get sprayed by the ocean for like two seconds and then hurried inside the restaurant.

After dinner we drove over to nearby Scarborough where our Airbnb for the night was. Our hosts had told us they would be out of town and had given us instructions to get inside the house. However, once we got inside, we realized the power was out. We sat there in the dark for about twenty minutes while we tried to get a hold of our hosts. We finally just decided to leave and get a hotel for the night. We were really sad because from what we could see of the house, it had been super nice! Oh well. We talked to some people in the neighborhood before we left and there had been a power outage in the whole neighborhood, but no one knew why. Things worked out okay though since we ended up finding a hotel a little farther south and had less of a drive the next morning.
